Alexandre Farto Aka Vhils "Dissection" Exhibition @ Lisbon's EDP Foundation

I first stumbled upon a Vhils solo exhibition in Paris 2012 (Magda Danysz Gallery) and was strucked by the variety of materials and technics this artist possess in his repertoire. I had previously been impressed by his works in the streets, making beautiful portraits on walls by chipping pieces off the wall, not spraying paint on the wall as usual for vandals. His exhibitions display works in paper, polystyrene, wood (old doors) and metal. Mostly portraits, but lately more and more with words or text. The "Dissection" exhibition at the EDP foundation museum in Belem Lisbon also showed light works and huge installations. The "Dissection" exhibition is just awesome and is open untill 5 of october this year.

Museu da Elecricidade is the EDP foundation's venue for the Vhils exhibition. The venue is located in the Belem area by the Tagus river (Tejo RIver).
The Electricity Museum (in Portuguese Museu da Electricidade) was set up by EDP (Energias de Portugal) in 2004. The EDP museum is a museum of science that presents the evolution of energy and it is a cultural centre where themed and experimental exhibits live side by side with a great variety of cultural events. The Vhils exhibition required huge adaptations of the space in the musuem and is the most extensive display of a Alexandre Farto Aka Vhils works up till now. I see it as a celebration of the portuguese artist and, so to speak, a really powerful liaison. The photos below show some of the works from the exhibition.

The biggest polystyrene structure I've ever seen. On have to climb a scaffolding about 5 m and see it from above

The exhibition is a visual feast and a mind-blowing experience.

The Control Tower (Nuart 2013 outside)

The best thing about Nuart is the outside works around the city of Stavanger.  Brilliant stuff is made around in town. The surprise this year, was the M-city work on the control tower at Stavanger airport (Sola).

Martha Cooper from US was specially invited. She's been photographing Graffiti and Street Art since the 70's. Street Art artists and enthusiasts all over the world owe her a lot for her journalism and photos.

The state of stencil and stensil art was a theme on the festival this year and three norwegian stencil artists: Strøk, DotDotDot and Martin Whatson presented their works.

Stencils plays an important part in the street art movement and is made in different styles and degrees of complexity. However, it's not the complexity that makes the street artist good. Drawing skills is an advantage, but I think it's the idea, the expression and placement that matters. The works by Strøk was fresh and interesting.

Ernest Zacharevic Nuart 2013
This year I was impressed by Ernest Zacharevic's works both inside and outside. The works of the Lithuanian, based in Malaysia, interacts very nicely with the environment.

Vhils: Scratching the surface

The portuguese street artist Alexandre Farto, commonly known as Vhils, have an unique take on street art.  He converts the wall to a scratchboard, chipping away the plaster and remove the negative space with a weathered touch. The wall becomes the subject itself and his portraits grows out of the wall. I first saw Vhils work in the streets London and was amazed by his technique and style. Since then, I've seen his works in the streets of Paris, Berlin and Stavanger.

With Vhils wall portraits, I get the feeling that "the wall" is trying to tell me something. Maybe make me aware of the sacrifices that some humans do for the sake of humanity and against oppression and that others pains and struggles have secured my own freedom and welfare.

The summer of 2012, I was lucky to see a solo exhibition of Vhils in Paris. I often find that artist that do work in the streets doesn’t work very well inside, as art in a gallery. Vhils works did well in the gallery. Using his unique scratching and chipping technique on doors, iron plates and styrofoam making smaller scale portraits.

I took the picture above in Stavanger, Norway, april 2012. "The fisherman" was made for the nuart festival in Stavanger 2010 and the huge portrait still looks strikingly fresh!

Together with this image I choose "Fisherman's Blues" by the Waterboys (click the link or the "play" button below!).
